Comedy Arts Fest is back to toss pie in the face of winter blues

TRAVERSE CITY – It's back. And better than ever.

That is the sentiment flowing from the venues and personalities that make up the Traverse City Winter Comedy Arts Festival this year.

“We're very excited about this year's winter comedy fest,” said Terry Carrithers, the event’s sponsorship manager. “It's an awesome partnership of two of the most successful festival organizations in Traverse City. We have put together an incredible compilation of comedians, movies, and winter events that will engage and delight people of all ages.”

While this year's Festival is certainly quite heavy with the comedy, it's also got a healthy dose of fun as well, including the newly announced Free On Front activities.

This collection of joy includes an ice rink, a sledding hill, Ferris wheel, a sports arena, ice sculpture and ice bowling. It will also include snowblower races, a frozen bed race, snow coloring, an ice skating clinic, kids' competitions, a monster dog pull, snow boat races, slip and fall Olympics and more.

These Free On Front activities start up at 10 a.m. on Feb. 15, 16 and 17, and run to various times each day. For the latest schedule, be sure to check www.traversecityfilmfest.org (there's a comedy festival link).

The actual Comedy Festival itself kicks off this Thursday, Valentine's Day, with a 9:30 p.m. headliner performance by legendary comedian Colin Quinn at the State Theatre, and 7:30 p.m. performance by Kathleen Madigan at the City Opera House.

A myriad of events is planned for Friday, Feb. 15, including a 6 p.m. performance by Robert Wuhl at the State Theatre, festival co-founder Jeff Garlin at 10:30 p.m. at the Old Town Playhouse, local improv group Good On Paper, also at 10:30 p.m. at InsideOut Gallery and a free bonfire.

Also on the 15th is a do-not-miss 11:59 p.m. showing of cult classic “Spaceballs” at the State Theatre. Continued...

Saturday, Feb. 16 is also jammed full – including the “Soup'r Bowl Soup Competition” at 11 a.m. followed by a day of laughter with The Bitter Buddha at 3:30 p.m. at the State Theatre, Dick Gregory at 6 p.m. in the City Opera House and Fringe Fest: The Movies of My Mind at 8:15 p.m. at InsideOut Gallery.

The final day of the Winter Comedy Arts Festival, Sunday, Feb. 17 kicks off with a Cherry Pancake Breakfast at 9 a.m., a 1 p.m. screening of “The Goonies” at the State Theatre, followed by “The Princess Bride” at 3:30 p.m.
